Every September, health groups across the country spotlight a topic many of us would rather skip past: our sexual health. Sexual Health Awareness Month is a yearly nudge to treat this part of your body the same way you treat your heart or your teeth, with routine attention and less worry. So, here is a fair question to start with: When did you last give yours a second thought?

This matters whether you are single, partnered, raising a family, or simply trying to stay informed about your health. Good sexual health is not only about steering clear of problems. It shapes your confidence, your relationships, and your peace of mind.

Importance of Sexual Health Awareness Month

CDC figures show that more than 2.2 million cases of three common infections, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, were reported across the country in 2024. That is down about 9% from the year before, the third year in a row of declines, which is encouraging. Even so, the totals remain higher than they were a decade ago, so this is no time to look away.

Closer to home, Marylanders ages 15 to 24 accounted for a large share of chlamydia and gonorrhea diagnoses in 2024. Baltimore City and Prince George’s County also reported substantial numbers of cases. That makes easy, local access to testing and preventative care more valuable than ever.

One more thing worth knowing is that many infections cause no signs at all. You can feel perfectly healthy and still be carrying something that could affect you, or a partner, over time. Feeling fine simply is not proof that you are in the clear, which is why testing beats guessing. Learning how to prevent STI transmission starts with that single idea.

JMS Sexual Health Resources

You do not have to figure this out on your own. As a Jai Medical Systems member, your sexual health is part of the coverage and coordination you already have.

Start with your primary care provider, who can talk through your concerns, recommend the right STI testing (sometimes called STD screening), order lab work, and explain vaccines or prevention medicine when it fits. You can also use your preventive benefits for HIV testing and routine checkups.

Prefer not to start with your regular doctor? Members can self-refer for family planning services and HIV diagnostic evaluation through a participating Maryland Medicaid provider. JMS also covers family planning visits and offers a 24/7 Nurse Advice Line for questions that come up after hours.

Simple Actions You Can Take

Protecting yourself comes down to a few steady habits:

  • Get tested on the right schedule. There is no one-size-fits-all plan, so ask your provider what makes sense for your age and situation.
  • Do not wait for symptoms. A new partner, a possible exposure, or simple peace of mind are all good reasons to check in.
  • Practice safe sex. Using condoms correctly and consistently can lower your risk of many STIs.
  • Stay current on recommended vaccines, and ask whether HIV prevention medicine is a fit for you.

Good STI prevention is not about fear or blame. It is everyday care, the same as any other checkup.
